Firmware is general are a piece of software which directly communicates with hardware. It’s the most low level and essential software which is generally hardware specific. You can think it like a basic set of codes which acts as a mediator between the hardware and highly complex and sophisticated softwares to achieve hardware independence.
However there are some embedded systems where the firmware itself acts as an operating system. For example an washing machine, where the firmware itself acts as a communication medium(as stated above) and also control and monitoring purposes.
I hope this information will be helpful!

Open the folder that contains your company file.
Find the files with the same file name as your company files but with extensions.ND and.TLG.
company_file.qbw.nd
company_file.qbw.tlg
Right-click each file and select Rename. Add the word OLD at the end of each file name. Ex: company_file.qbw.nd.OLD
Open QuickBooks again and try to sign in to your company file. If the same issue occurs, proceed to solution 2.
